Hill College Board of Regents holds May 2023 monthly meeting

On May 16, 2023, the Hill College Board of Regents met for the monthly regular session meeting.
The minutes from the April meeting were approved. The financial report was also presented and approved. Enrollment numbers were presented as well, with an overall increase for Spring 2023.
Hill College President Dr. Thomas Mills presented his report, including performing arts events; end-of-the-year student events; several awards ceremonies, including Teen Forum, year-end academic awards, and Phi Theta Kappa inductees; the Fire Protection Technology night burn; and the 2023 commencement.
Additional updates included the annual Boots & Suits event held in April, which raised over $40,000 this year for scholarships and campus resource rooms.
The Medal of Honor Memorial Brick Ceremony was held on May 1 at the Texas Heritage Museum in recognition of the service of Congressman Jake Ellzey, Senator Brian Birdwell, Mr. William Galiga, and Mrs. Yvonne Mills, with good attendance. Afterward, Congressman Ellzey practiced with the Hill College baseball team.
Dr. Mills’ report also included updates on the Texas Commission on Community College Finance legislation. The bill was passed by the Senate Subcommittee and is going to the Senate Education Committee.
Information about the Burleson Opportunity Fund (BOF) was presented. Through fundraising, the BOF raises scholarship money for high school students who live or attend school in Burleson. Applicants are eligible for up to two years of tuition and fees to attend Hill College.
Proposed improvements to the Wallace campus were also presented, including a land purchase of approximately six acres, the construction of a pavilion and fire pit, a bridge to trails, landscaping, and necessary infrastructure. Funds for this project are proposed to be a disbursement from the Hill College Foundation.
Updates on the continuation of campus maintenance were presented. Upcoming projects presented for approval included the library erosion and repairs project, a total of $184,160, and the Performing Arts Center maintenance and upgrades for the lighting system, a total of $142,057. The motions were approved.
The nursing building at the Johnson County Campus sustained roof damage from recent storms and will need repair.
Athletic Director Paul Brown presented the athletic report, including athlete accolades for the 2022–2023 academic year and updates on the baseball and softball teams. Two track students are set to compete at the national track meet in Hobbs, New Mexico.
Dr. Nancy Cure, interim Vice President of Instruction, presented two affiliation agreements for the echocardiography program and a consideration of approval of a contract agreement for a learning management system through Brightspace at an initial cost of $35,700.67 for the first year, followed by an annual cost of $44,401.35. All were approved.
Dr. Mills presented two consideration of approvals agreements, one for the Audi Educational Partnership program and one for the Mopar Vehicle and Materials agreement. Both were approved.
Personnel updates were presented and approved.
Dr. William Auvenshine, a longtime board member and former Hill College president, submitted his resignation. It was accepted with the thanks of the board and college administration for his years of service to Hill College.

Members absent: Kent Eubank, Dr. Allan Lane, and Kevin Ray.
The Hill College Board of Regents meets the third Tuesday of every month.
